“I’ve had to sit in a separate room at a Michelin-star restaurant. Although it was accommodating of them, I should be able to enjoy the ambiance in the restaurant like everyone else”

What Businesses Must Do

To become Safe to Trade approved, food businesses must:

  • Pass an unannounced audit by a qualified safety expert.
  • Meet high standards in food hygiene, allergen control, labelling, and front-of-house cleanliness.
  • Fix any issues quickly and prove they’ve done so.

Approval isn’t permanent—businesses are rechecked every year and must monitor their own standards daily.

How the Programme Works

Approved businesses are listed on the Safe to Trade directory, you can search for them here and even leave feedback. If serious risks are found, approval is paused or revoked until the issues are resolved.
